PREFACE"The hardest thing about English is the preposition," students have frequently wailed to me. After watching their struggles with the "little words" and correcting their speech and writing for more than a decade, I agree with them.Starting off with the "logical" or "locational" uses of prepositions makes matters deceptively simple: it is easy to learn the differences between "on the table," "in the table," "under the table," and "near the table." But what about "in time" and "on time," "in my opinion" and "on second thought," or "call up" and "call down" and "call on" and "call off"?
