PREFACEThe Certificate of Proficiency in English and the Lower Certificate in English are examinations held twice a year by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate for candidates whose mother tongue is not English.This book is intended as a guide for those wishing to take the examinations. It explains the requirements of the different language papers and contains passages for comprehension and précis, and notes on English grammar.The Certificate of Proficiency comprises the following tests: oral Dictation, Reading and Conversation.written (a) Either English Literature, or Science Texts, or English Life and Institutions, or Survey of Industry and Commerce; ib) Either Use of English,or Translation from and into English; (c) English Language.The Lower Certificate comprises the following tests:oral Dictation, Reading and Conversation.written (fl) Either Prescribed Books,or Translation from and into English ; ib) English Composition and Language.Details of the requirements and syllabuses of the papers not discussed in this book are given in the regulations for the examinations published by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate and obtainable from the Secretary (Examinations in English), 17 Harvey Road, Cambridge.
