PREFACE
This study originally appeared in Hungarian in 2001. It is the result of research and reflection over a period of half a century. It is essentially a narrative. It begins v^ith the early Middle Ages, since prior to that time Eastern Europe was not a separate entity.
I would like to thank colleagues and friends in the Institute of History of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, of the universities of Budapest and Debrecen, as well as former and current seminar students, who assisted in the improvement of the narrative with their comments, critiques and responses. I am of course fully responsible for the text. Special thanks are due to Atlantic Research and Publications Inc. and its president, Professor Béla Király for publishing the English-language edition and thereby making the study accessible to an international readership.
