Dear Reader,
GDR—you have certainly seen these three letters in a newspaper, at a fair, in a cinema or elsewhere. Thus you know that GDR is the abbreviation for German Democratie Republic—for one of the two German states which have co me into existence on German territory after the Second World War.
You will have different views about the GDR, according to where you live and what your special interests are. Perhaps you think of the Leipzig Fair or the Dresden Picture Gallery, of the optica! products of the Zeiss Works, Meissen porcelain or Plauen lace. We assume that you want to learn more about the GDR and therefore invite you to go on a little journey through this country with us. In this booklet we plan to teil you something about the centres of industry in the GDR and also about the country and its people, its landscape and cultural sights.
Let us suppose that you take the at present fastest means of conveyance—a jet passenger airplane—you will first set foot on GDR soil at the central air port of Interflug (GDR airline) in Berlin-Schönefeld. Most visitors first go to Berlin, the capital of the GDR, after landing at this airport which has been extended in recent years and modernized—the planes of many foreign airlines also take off and land on its runways in constant change. Certainly you, too, will not miss the opportunity to become acquainted with the metropolis of our country. We wish you much pleasure here and in the further course of your visit.
