PREFACE
This book has been planned to show how the masters of English literature have used our language to express their thoughts with clarity and precision and to demonstrate to the reader, by means of the examples given and the discussion of them, that everyone can write and speak English lucidly and easily.
The writing of good English depends not upon a pedantic use of unassailable granmiatical rules, but upon the happy choice of words and phrases which present the writer's thoughts vividly and precisely. The grammar in Acts of Parliament is above reproach but the meaning, or perhaps, more strictly the intention, of the author is frequently, alas, more than a little obscure.
The value of this book lies in the choice of the examples and the clarity of the explanation and discussion of them, thus guiding the reader to the formation of a writing technique based upon the best models.
