To the Student: How to use this book
Programmes are carefully organised exercises with answers, so that you can see if you are correct or not.
You will see that the first and last sections of each Unit are called 'Test Yovu-self !' You do not have to do these, but it would be interesting for you to see if you can do the 'Test Yourself!' at the end more easily than the one at the begirming. If you can, you can feel more confident about your English.
After the 'Test Yourself!', there is a short text to read. (You will also find a longer version of this text in Book One of the course—Class Texts.) Read the text, and also the Grammar notes after it.
Then comes the programme. The questions are on the outside of the pages, and the answers in the middle, so that you can cover them. Also, the answers are not beside the questions, so you cannot see them by mistake.
The best way to do the questions is to read them aloud to yourself. You can also write the missing words in the book—or on another piece of paper—^if you like.
This is how it works. First the question; read it aloud and say the missing word:
1 Sir Winston Churchill was born in
Now the answer. All the answers are in capital letters, and each answer frame has a smaU letter 'a'—for 'answer'—^beside the number:—_
1 Sir Winston Churchill was born in Enj.lorxJy.
la Sir Winston Churchill was born in ENGLAND.
Now the second question; you have some help with this one:-
I
1 Sir Winston Churchill was born in S/^loficL. la Sir Winston Churchill was born in ENGLAND. 2 Nap was born in Corsica.
And the second answer:-, 1
1 Sir Winston Churchill was born in Ena/cu^J^ 2a NAPOLEON was born in Corsica. la Sir Winston Churchill was born in ENGLAND. 2 Nap -oiion^ was born in Corsica.
