Guide to the Course
1 AIMS OF THE COURSE
A Modern Course in Business English aims to provide teaching materials to suit the intermediate adult learner of English who is engaged in commercial life or interested in economic affairs in general. It presupposes a basic knowledge of English, but is specially constructed to revise familiar basic patterns of the language and to take the student to a more specialist knowledge at the same time. The course has, then, two main objectives :
-to act as a bridge between foundation and specialist Enghsh, and
— to provide a wide variety of different types of English, different topics of discussion and different kinds of activity to suit as extensive a range of student abilities and interests as possible.
2 DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE MATERIALS
The course consists of:
-a Classbook for students —a Course Manual for teachers
—a set of accompanying tape recordings available on open-reel or cassette
— a supplementary book of programmed self-instruction units.
Students' Classbook
Each unit of teaching material in the Classbook (except Unit 10) consists of:
— a class text which (a) contextualizes the basic structural patterns of the course syllabus (see note on the Syllabus on p. ix), and (b) develops the narrative structure which holds the course together,
— a dialogue which illustrates the use of English in those everyday situations that the businessman visiting Britain might meet,
— a reading text, with accompanying language notes and exercises, which deals with a topic of general economic interest related to the theme of the unit, and
— printed material (examples, comprehension questions etc.) for use with the tapes.
Teachers' Course Manual
The Course Manual contains all the material in the students' Classbook and, in addition :
— keys to the exercises, and
— transcripts of the laboratory tapes.
