PREFACE
This practical handbook for the class-room is based on many years' experience in the teaching of Enghsh. It is hoped that the book will be found useful where " individual " work is carried on ; but the author has not overlooked the inspiration, encouragement, and guidance which only the teacher can supply. Stress is laid on Oral Composition, Speech Training, the Vocabulary, and the Study of Models. A section on Humour has been included.
The pupils wiU need special help from the teacher in the exercises on Speech Training, and in the selection of work so as to secure variety, since it is not intended that the whole of one section should be worked through at one time. The inspiration of the teacher wiU also be felt in reading aloud to the class passages in prose and verse.
The book is intended for the use of pupUs in the higher classes in Primary Schools, in the lower forms in Secondary Schools, in Central Schools, Day Continuation Schools, and Evening Institutes.
