PREFACEThis book results from the encouragement of several friends who suggested I produce a one-volume survey of postwar Italy. It is the outgrowth of two earlier books that together cover most of the postwar period. I am grateful to the many people, American and Italian, who have provided me with ideas and suggestions, and who have stimulated my continuing interest in Italy. Most of all, my wife Meryl, to whom this volume is dedicated, has sustained me over the years. The Italian people continue to draw me back to their fascinating peninsula, and I take this opportunity to thank them for their warmth and hospitality. They have suffered much and survived much in a long history but they have not lost their commitment to life. Whatever the future may bring, may they retain their ability to find satisfaction from the close ties of family and friends.Norman Kogan Storrs, Connecticut
