w^outh Australia's boundaries enclose a wide variety of landscapes, from the craggy peaks of the Flinders Ranges to fertile Murray River orchards, from the magnificent seacoasts of the Eyre Peninsula to the rolling dunes of the Simpson Desert in the arid north-east. The State is rich in minerals, while its seas provide abundant harvests of fish and crustaceans. The climate of the south-east, where most of the population is concentrated, is Mediterranean. Local areas such as the Barossa and Clare Valleys and the Southern Vales produce more than sixty per cent of Australia's wine each year, while wheat, citrus and stone fruits are among crops produced in the fertile areas of the State. Adelaide, capital of South Australia, is situated on Gulf St Vincent and is sheltered by the Mount Lofty Ranges. A site for Adelaide was chosen in 1836 by Colonel William Light, who then surveyed and laid out the city. He wrote in 1839, "The reasons which led me to fix Adelaide where it is I do not expect to be generally understood or calmly judged of at present ... I am perfectly willing to bear [the responsibility] and I leave it to posterity ... to decide whether I am entitled to praise or blame." Posterity has only praise for the gracious city, with its wide boulevards and magnificent parklands. There is something in Adelaide to please everyone - the Festival, the casino, museums, galleries, restaurants and cafés, markets and boutiques. Adelaide is a superb gateway to the great State of South Australia!
