IKATHERINE MANoFIE;.D'S BIOGRAPHYThis is not meant to be an exhaustive biography as it only forma a part of this study of Katherine Mansfield. Nevertheless we have tried to elucidate some new aspects of her life and character, relying mainly on the evidences found in the Letters and the Journal. As has been so often pointed out by different critics, she was a highly subjective writer, her moods and the events of her life influencing her sometimes capricious nature are also reflected in the stories. So in some cases we have tried to find the relevant connections between the mood and atmosphere of a story and the real events and facts behind. It has always been a point of argument among literary critics whether a comprehensive study of the life of an author is or is not necessary for a fuller understanding c? his work. Our opinion is that the disclosure of the real personality and the individual character of Katherine Mansfield may help the reader to have a clearer image of her vision of the world and eventually this may result in a better and more profound comprehension of the writer's work.Katherine Mansfield was born as the third child of the Beauchamp family on the 14th Oct. 1888. Anthony Alpers gives a detailed description of the family the grandfather, who nig-rated to Australia, the maternal grandfather, who also left Eng-land at the age of twenty-one to settle in the Antipodes. The latter married a Sydney girl, who is later described as Grandmother in the New Zealand stories, and Katherine Mansfield in her Journal always remembered her with affection.
