PREFACE TO THE SEVENTH EDITION
The revision of a textbook of medicine, never a facile enterprise, can become quite a formidable task when undertaken in the midst of a world war. It was under such conditions that the present Seventh Edition of A Textbook of Medicine by American Authors was initiated. Many of the contributors were in the Armed Forces- and stationed in foreign countries where access to medical libraries and standard medical treatises was impossible. Hard-pressed professors of medicine who remained at home on duty in the medical colleges found little time to spare for preparing manuscripts or revising old ones. However, thanks to a fine spirit of co-operation, the almost impossible task has been achieved and the editor releases the hew edition with more than usual pride in the personnel of the contributors and in the high quality of the material presented.
The present edition contains a number of new articles on subjects not covered in previous editions:
Blackwater Fever Drug Allergy Marijuana Intoxication Vitamin A Deficiency Acrodynia

PREFACE TO THE SEVENTH EDITION xvii
erly in the section on Diseases of the Arteries, and Syphilis of the Central Nervous System previously listed under Nervous Diseases, have both been transferred to the section on Infectious Diseases and follow in sequence the general discussion of Syphilis.
It is with deep regret that the Editor must report the death of four contributors. Dr. M. Henry Dawson, Dr. Frederic M. Hanes, Dr. William Worthington Herrick, and Dr. Walter Kraus.
In the sixth edition, the text for the first time was rearranged in double columns. This format has proved to be very popular and has therefore been retained in the seventh edition.
The Editor wishes to express his great appreciation of the services of Dr. Walsh McDer-mott. Associate Professor of Medicine in the Cornell University Medical College, for his untiring aid in assisting with the editorial work. Dr. McDermott brought to this task an unusual degree of enthusiasm and a background of training in internal medicine which made him an ideal co-worker in this difficult field.
It is with much regret that the Editor reports the resignation of Dr. Foster Kennedy as Associate Editor for Diseases of the Nervous System. Dr. Kennedy has supervised and edited the Nervous Diseases since the inception of this textbook in 1926. His aid and advice have been immeasurable. Dr. Kennedy will continue as a contributor to the section on Nervous Diseases. In the present edition we have been fortunate in obtaining the services of Dr. Harold G. Wolff, Professor of Medicine in Charge of Nervous Diseases in the Cornell University Medical College, who has acted as Associate Editor for Diseases of the Nervous System. Dr. Wolff has given considerable time and thought to the revision of this important part of the Textbook and has introduced a number of new topics.
Special acknowledgments are due to Dr. Robert Gosling, Mrs. Natalie J. Hoyt, and Mrs. Constance C. Wissmueller for their assistance with proofreading and general editorial work.
