Preface
In Neurology, as in other branches of medicine, progress has been so rapid that in the span of four years a new edition of this text is necessary to keep it up to date.
The formát follows in generál that of the three previous editions. Somé rearrangements of various disease entities have been made and the recent advances in the pathogenesis and treatment of a number of disorders have been included. Sections have been added on the mechanism of intracranial hypertension in endocrine and metabolic disorders, the effects on the nervous system of drugs such as the phenothiazines and contraceptive hormones, the mechanism of hypotonia in infants and the causes of syn-cope. The discussion of a number of new disease entities has been added, including: progressive multifocal encephalopathy associated with malignant neoplasms and apparently due to infection with one of the papova viruses; malformations of the nervous system associated with chromosomal defects; myositis, paramyotonia congenita and a number of other diseases of the muscles; familial dysautonomia, associated with a disturbance of catechol metabolism; hereditary ataxic polyneuritis due to a defect in lipid metabolism; homocystinuria and oculo-cerebral-renal syndrome of Low associated with disturbances of aminő acid metabolism; and several degenerative diseases of infancy.
The discussion of somé diseases, syphilis of the nervous system for cxample, which are assuming less importance have been shortened. A number of new illustrations and tables have been added and the literature cited in the references has been brought up to date. The extensive index, which is intended to serve as a guide in differential diagnosis, has been revised.
I am especially indebted to Drs. Ernest H. Wood and Philip E. Duffy for supplying new illustrations; to Drs. Harry H. White, Bennett M. Derby and Roger N. Rosenberg for their assistance in the compilation of the recent literature; and to Miss Edna D. Borea for aid in the editing of the text and the index.
