Josef Werndl founded the Josef and Franz Werndl Company Firearms Factory some 120 years ago, and manufactured the Werndl bolt-action rifle, which was the first breechloader to be used by the Austro-Hungarian Imperial Army. Chief Engineer Ferdinand Mannlicher designed his famous straight-pull bolt-action repeater and the arms company was given the Imperial edict to manufacture the Mannlicher rifle. At the turn of the century, the arms factory branched out into a new mode of manufacture, and produced Its first car, the 'Steyr.' In time, and as part of further permutations, the firm became part of a merger to form Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG. This firm has had many accomplishments over the years of Its existence, and here we present the pride of Steyr-Dalmler-Puch's present production of firearms.
The Steyr ACJQ (Army Universal Gun) is today the most highly modern personal weapon embodying the most up-to-date technology. The highly variable and versatile Steyr ACJQ weapons system Is based on a total of six main assemblies comprising all individual parts of the various AUG versions. As a result it is possible to produce various AUG versions which, while basically differing from one another mere-

The basic AGG versions and their barrel lengths—which distinguish them—are as follows: Commando model, 14 inches; Machine Carbine model, 16 inches; Assault Rifle model, 20 inches; and the Light Support Weapon, 24.5 inches. However, all main assemblies and individual parts are fully interchangeable within the AGG weapons system. In addition there is a wide range of optional equipment, which can likewise be used for the entire AUG weapons system.
The Steyr AUG Is engineered to the compact 'bullpup' design, and is rugged and durable—made to operate in a wide variety of conditions—from desert to artic, and In between. Weapons in which the magazine is located to the rear of the trigger are said to be of ' bullpup 'design. This bullpup design makes for an extremely short overall length of the weapon, ie it is about 25 percent shorter than conventional designs.
The overall length with the 20 inch barrel is only 31 inches. With the 16 inch barrel, the overall length Is even just 27 Inches. In this way it becomes possible to dispense with a folding stock version, along with
