THETHEORY TEST & HPT
About the Theory Test
You now have to pass two driving tests before you can apply for a full driving licence. The Theory Test was introduced in 1996, and this book contains the official questions from the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) that you may have to answer. You will have to pass both the question part and the videó part (or HPT - see below) to pass your Theory Test, before you can apply for the Practical Test.

How to use this book
1. Look at the list of topics on page 5 and turn to one you find interesting.
2. Read the first question and tick your choice of answer(s).
3. Check your answer(s) against the correct answers at the back of the book.
4. Make sure you understand the answer(s) before you try the next question.
Warning
Do not try too many questions at once. Do not try to learn the answers by heart. The order of the answers in this book may be different from how they are arranged in the actual test - so do not try to memorise the order.
How to answer the questions
Each questions has four, five or six answers. You must mark the boxes with the correct answer or answers. Each question telis you how many answers to mark.
The Theory Test questions
You will have 40 minutes to complete the question part of the test, using a touch-screen, and all questions are multiple-choice. The Government may change the pass mark from time to time. Your driving school will be able ta teli you if there has been a change. Alsó, the Government may, from time to time, introduce new or amended questions. However, if you are fully prepared on each topic, you will be in a position to answer any question.

Study each, question carefully, making sure you understand. Look carefully at any diagram, drawing or photograph. Before you look at the answers given, decide what you think the right answer may be. You can then select the answer that matches the one you had decided on. If you follow this system, you will avoid being confused by answers that appear to be similar.
The Hazard Perception Test
Towards the end of 2002, the Theory Test will be extended to include HPT. HPT stands for Hazard Perception Test, and you will need to pass both the questions and the videó test to get a pass in your Theory Test.
