AIways plan your route carefully - doing so will save time in the long run
This special route-planning map enables you to devise a basic route before referring to the main pages of the atlas for greater detail. Principal routes throughout the country are shown and large conurbations pinpointed. You may find it useful to make a note of road numbers and route directions before setting out. You are advised to avoid driving through towns and built-up areas, where possible, even if such routes appear to be more direct from the map. Delays caused by traffic lights, one-way systems and other road-users will almost certainly be encountered in such areas.
Call AA Roadwatch or listen to local radio to avoid delays on your journey
Delays and hold-ups
Despite ever-increasing levels of traffic, motorways are still the quiekest means of getting from A to B. Nevertheless, a hold-up on a motorway can easily delay your joumey for several hours. There are a number of ways of gleaning information about the stretches of motorway to avoid: by phone, radio and newspaper.
Radio
Frequent radio bulletins are issued by both the BBC and by independent local radio stations about road and weather conditions, and likely hold-ups; these can be of great assistance. By tuning in to the local radio stations as you pass through their areas, you can avoid delays and prepare to make changes to your route. However, local radio does not yet cover the entire country.
