PREFACE
Ihis volume contains the proceedings of a workshop on "Acid Deposition" held on September 9, 1982 at the Reichstag in Berlin.
Ihe workshop was organized within the framework of project COST 61a bis* of the Commission of the European Communities (CEC), as a satellite meeting to the joint meeting of Working Parties 4 (Pollutant Cycles) and 5 (Transport and Modelling - Field Experiments) vAiich was held on September 7 - 8 at the Federal Environmental Agency in Berlin.
"rtie organisation of the scientific workshop programme was in the hands of a CEC Acid Deposition Task Force consisting of nine scientists actively participating in projects COST 61a or COST 61a bis : Beilke (Federal Republic of Germany), Brosset (Sweden), Elshout (The Netherlands), Graven-horst (France), Liberti (Italy), Ott (CEC, Belgium), Penkett (United Kingdom), Sandroni (CEC, Italy) and Zephoris (France).
The workshop programme consisted of the presentation and discussion of five invited review papers covering different areas of the acid deposition problem and of ongoing work on topics vAiich are relevant to acid depo-siticai. ESiphasis was placed on new scientific ideas and on indicating the most inportant areas of uncertainty, including the specification of a series of key research needs in the field of acid deposition, this was done out of concern for dam^e to forest and freshwater ecosystems in various European regions attributed at least in part to acid deposition originating from air pollution.
The discussion of research needs relevant to the acid deposition problem was mainly confined to jAiysico-chemical processes occurring in the lower atmosphere.
Most of the research needs specified in these proceedings are contained in the p^r entitled "Acid Deposition - The present situation in Europe" prep^ed by S. Beilke and discussed by the CEC Task Force and t^ the participants of the Berlin workshop. A specification of research needs on environmental effects was not attenpted in this paper since such effects are not investigated within project COST 61a bis. Some research needs on ecological effects were specified by B. Ulrich in his p^r on "Effects of acid deposition".
