PREFACE
The Society of Ecotoxicoiogy and Environmental Safety (SECOTOX) is unique in the sense that it is the only international toxicological society that puts as much emphasis on the impact of chemicals on wildlife and ecosystems as it does on the impact of chemical pollution on man. This approach was also characteristic for the 3rd meeting of the Central and Eastern European Regional Section at Balatonaliga, Hungary. During the four day meeting a range! of subjects was discussed on the basis of verbal presentations and posters, including case studies conceming assessments of risks of pollutants for humans and ecosystems, environmental mutagenesis and carcinogenesis, developments in analytical techniques, biomonitoring procedures and toxicity testing, new aspects of regulation and developments in the field of remediation technology. As during the previous regional meetings it became again apparent that the organisation of regional workshops and symposia may be very rewarding, because it does strongly support an integrated approach In the solution of environmental problems that can only be solved through regional risk management policies. Especially in Central Europe there are many transborder problems related to industrial air pollution and pollution of river systems, for instance the Danube.
The meeting was very Well organised, like the previous meetings in Slovakia and Poland. SECOTOX is organised in the form of a network of communicating scientists. It does not raise funds through high membership contributions because we would not like to see that the membership fee would prevent people from participation in activities of the society. As a consequence all our activities are organised on an ad hoc basis by Council members and local organising committees. With regard to the present meeting the Council of SECOTOX wants to compliment the Organising Committee and its Chairman Dr. Alan Pinter for the way they managed to make this meeting so interesting and pleasant at the same time.
Prof. Dr. Jan H. Koeman, President of SECOTOX at the time of the meeting at Balatonaliga.
