Introduction to the Teachers' Notes General Description of the Course This is a course fór adolescent and aduit leamers of English. The íirst three books constitute the basic course and should be completed in approximately 300 hours of classroom teaching. Each book contains sufficient matériái fór an ordinary year's work, assuming three or four fifty-minute classes a week. The course is sufficiently flexible however to allow fór a slower or faster pace. Grading of GrammaticalThe authors believe in the descriptive rather than the prePattemsscriptive approach to grammar, and consider that attempting to explain the 'rules of grammar' does nőt help the students in a basic course and may often be harmful as well as time-consuming. Since students must, however, be able to produce grammatically acceptable sentences, the grammatical pattems of the language are presented and practised in a carefully graded order. The new pattems to be taught in each lesson are clearly set out at the end of the conversation and no other pattems nőt previously taught occur in the text. Each new pattem is presented in context and practised, íirst orally, and then in writing, until it can be used with reasonable fluency and accuracy by the students. It will still require further practice in a variety of contexts before it is completely mastered. Language Leaming a Cumu lative Process: Progressive Use of Matéria! Learat Since language learning is a cumulative process, new pattems leamt must be practised in combination with other pattems already mastered. Exercises are provided in each lesson and further suggestions are given in the teachers' notes to help teachers to keep this process active. Great care is taken to ensure that the number of pattems partially mastered at any period in the course is kept to a minimum.
