Adhesion and Adhesives I. [antikvár]

The first edition of this book, which was published in 1951 under the editorship of N.A. de Bruyne and R. Houwink, collected in one volume information about the scientific and technological aspects of adhesion. By 1961 theory had been covered by several monographs, and in planning this new edition it was felt that more space should be devoted to the rapidly growing applications of synthetic adhesives. Several contributors succeeded in delivering a penetrating analysis of highly specialized technological topics. The size of these contributions ultimately made a division into two volumes necessary. In order to take account of the latest considerable advances in the understanding of adhesion processes, additions were made to the first chapter during the final phase of editing. Further references to literature published recently are given in the Introduction to Volume 2. Natural and synthetic, organic, inorganic and metallic adhesives are covered by the ten chapters constituting Volume 1. Processing of adhesives and adherends into finished products is the main theme of the second volume. Bonding operations now have a well-established place in production engineering, as is illustrated by detailed discussions of metál bonding and of bonding in the wood industry. No attempt has been made, however, to cover all major industrial applications; this would have meant repetition of the same theme. Much space throughout the book is devoted to the mechanical behaviour of adhesives and adherends; in the last chapter an account is given of mechanical testing, including the latest (1964) ASTM Standards. The two volumes, although self-contained to somé extent, are interlinked and integrated by many cross-references, so that the book will serve as a comprehensive treatise. The task of Dr. N. A. de Bruyne has been taken over in this edition by Dr. G. Salomon, who is in fact responsible for most of the editing of the two volumes.
