1. Introduction I. Terminology The majority oi the over 200 objects of Egyptian art and culture described in tliis catalogue were brought together from tfie Coptic Museum, Cairo, the Graeco-Roman Museum, Alexandria, and the newly-founded Alexandria National Museum, Alexandria. Tlie material coming from these most prestigious collections of Coptic art was complemented with objects from Hungarian collections. They span the period between the third and seventh centuries AD, i.e., the late antique and early Byzantine periods of Egyptian art. Besides works of art dating from the period between the mid-third and the seventh century, the exhibition also includes objects dating from earlier times (nos I-16). They highlight the traditions from which the art of this period emerged. A further group of objects dating from later periods, also including an icon painted in 1777 (nos 171-195, 197-206), is presented in order to demonstrate the survival of artistic traditions formed in the late antique and early Byzantine periods. In this catalogue, the term "late antique" covers the period between the mid-third and the mid-fifth century, the term "early Byzantine" the period between the mid-fifth century and the Arab Conquest of Egypt in 639-646. Other terms will also be used in the description of the forms and styles of Egyptian art before and in these periods. "Hellenic" will refer in most general terms to conceptions, forms, and styles deriving from Greek culture; the term "Classical" will refer to conceptions, forms and styles in the arts of the Mediterranean in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Speaking about forms and styles, "Greek" may occasionally stand for both "Hellenic" and "Classical". Egyptian culture between the mid-third century and the Arab Conquest and the culture of the Egyptian Christians after the Conquest is frequently termed "Coptic". The word "Copt" derives from Arabic ^iit, an abbreviation of Greek diytKZOi;, Aigyptios, "Egyptian". In turn, Greek Aigyptios derives from the ancient Egyptian name of the city of Memphis, hwt-ki-Pth. The Coptic is the last written form of the ancient Egyptian language, written in Greek alphabetic characters to which seven signs were added. These derived from the Demotic writing and covered Egyptian phonemes not present in Greek. The Coptic writing system was developed in the third century AD. Initially, it was used for biblical texts. By the middle of the fourth century it was also used for Christian literary works and private letters. The first legal texts occur in the sixth century, and, besides its literary use, also the increasing non-literary use of the Coptic continues for centuries after the Arab Conquest (fig. I). In Arab usage ^lii referred to non-Muslims and, before the ninth century, to non-Arabic speakers; accordingly, the term "Copt" traditionally denotes the Christian descendants of the ancient Egyptian population.
