Preface to the Third Edition
Continuing developments in macroeconomic theory and practice have produced many amendments to the general structure of aggregate analysis. Nevertheless, the basic structure of the theory, and of this book, is substantially unchanged despite many revisions.
Like its predecessors, this edition is intended for students. I have tried, therefore, to keep the basic structure as clear as possible, so that the student will not lose sight of the goal while pursuing details. The plan of analysis begins with the simplest form, gradually working to the most complex. Each step, from the simple three-variable model of Chapter 4, through the IS-LM curves of Chapter 11, to the total aggregate demand and supply analysis of Chapter 13, is developed by the progressive addition of new elements. A fringe benefit of this approach is that students will come to understand the process of construction of models in economics, as well as the particular model that we use in aggregate analysis.
Many detailed changes have been made in following this plan. Chapter 4 has been simplified by removing government. Government spending, taxes, and transfers are added in Chapter 5 and kept
