WHAT IS THE ALIYAH POCKET GUIDE? It is easier to start explaining what the Aliyah Pocket Guide is not. It is not a compendium of laws and government regulations, although it does describe many of them. The Aliyah Pocket Guide does not aim to answer all questions about life in Israel - indeed, that would be impossible. Its purpose, rather, is to give you, the oleh, an idea of the overall context of benefits and obligations which your new status thrusts upon you. Every family, every individual has a different set of needs and circumstances, and for this reason olim are advised to use this guide to raise questions relevant to their own situations. This booklet is essentially an introductory overview of the aliyah process, with information geared to generál, mainstream situations. It is, however, backed by a series of more detailed booklets on education, housing, military service, employment, health care and national insurance. Please note that information is sometimes liable to change between printings, and olim are therefore urged to consult the network of counselors, shlihim and metaplim who are constantly updated on any changes.
