Introduction
Whoever visits Antwerp for the first time is astonished at the rich variety of the places of interest that the city offers. There is much to see and experience, in the sphere of both art history and commerce. The city can be characterized in the following ways:
- as a commercial city and port with international reputation,
- as a city of art and culture where, among others, P.P.Rubens played a leading part,
- as a matchless and world-renowned centre for the diamond industry.
The art treasures in numerous museums, churches,
patrician houses and historical buildings reflect a rich historical past. The port hums with intense activi-ty and the skill of the diamond cutters is represented in the "Antwerp cut".
Judged by the number of inhabitants - half a millión -Antwerp does not count among the great cities of the world, but, with the port which extends to the Dutch bordér, its extent is greater than that of the Belgian capital, Brussels.
It is hoped that this album of coloured photographs will enable you to remember Antwerp and alsó be your guide forfuture visits.
