ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
In my years of political consulting, one piece of advice that I continually give to candidates—which, I might add, they never take—is to not recognize the dignitaries at county or state party functions, because inevitably you end up mildly pleasing fifteen people and thoroughly dissing another three. As difficult as it is, this is one instance where I'm going to follow the advice I give my candidates and not make any public acknowledgments of the people who helped me with this book or my career. Each of you knows who you are, and if in my own way I've failed to acknowledge you in a person-to-person manner, please don't blame my parents—they raised me better than that. Blame me.
I will take this opportunity to depart slightly from my counsel and acknowledge one person, and that is President Bill Clinton, without whose tenacity, hard work, vision, and trust in me this book and a lot of other things that have happened would not have been possible.

As is often the case, while he might be right, from my vantage point he's wrong. At the risk of annoying someone, the following people really do deserve special thanks.
