Never before has so much information been available on the increasing opportunities for ambitious school-leavers and on the wide rangé of work in which men and women are daily engaged. The Gareers Master and the Gareers Mistress, the Youth Employment Officer, the Press, radio and television, careers pamphlets and directories, the enticing brochures issued by firms - all are purveyors of knowledge, either personal or impersonal, of the growing variety and complexity of modern occupations. Now this anthology is not intended to be another 'careers' book, or, in any way, a mere supplement to the sources of information that have been mentioned in the foregoing paragraph. Its chief aim is to exemplify. It animates the dry bones of the factual material that may have been gathered elsewhere by a living representation of men and women at work in nearly forty different types of employment. All the extracts have been drawn from twentieth-century copyright publications. They have been selected because of their humán interest, and because they are likely to appeal not only to pupils in schools and students in colleges but alsó to the generál reader; in fact, equally to those who are still in the midst of their studies and to those whose schooldays ended perhaps even a generation ago. The thirty-six extracts have been divided into three sections: Personal Experience, Visits, Description. A glancé at the üst of contents will show the number of distinguished authors that have been pressed into service and the extent of the activities that are illustrated in the anthology. A few examples will suffice. For those who aspire to the profession of letters, from whom better to seek advice than from such exponents of the craft as John Braine, Raymond Mortimer and J. A.
