PREFACE This book is primarily intended as a revision course for adult students overseas in their fourth or fifth year of English. Adult students, generally speaking, like to apply their own intelligence and powers of analysis to language problems; it is hoped this book will encourage them to do so without hampering in any way the normal work of the teacher. The standard aimed at is that required by the Lower Certificate in English of the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. Because the main emphasis in this examination is on written work, special attention has been paid to the structure of paragraphs and essays, and to questions of word order. There is, however, plenty of material in the Reading-Texts and exercises for practising other skills. The texts and exercises are not graded according to difficulty, and there is no need for the teacher to work through them in order; indeed, the intention is that the teacher should find material to revise those points of English sentence structure in which mistakes, at this level, most commonly occur, as and when he thinks fit. The For Study sections contain notes on, and examples of, the structurally most important particles (prepositions and adverbs) and a number of common verbs that are frequently either confused or misused. Their object is twofold: to provide illustrative material for the teacher in class and useful references for the student on his own.
