PREFACE S was stated in the preface to the earlier editions of Simple Science, the material of these books was written for young people, to serve as an introduction to the more specialised study of science. The authors' aim was to present science nőt as a " school subject," but as a living body of knowledge which is interwoven intő everything around us, whether machines or manufactured articles or the play of natural forces, whether the life of ths íields or the mysteries of the laboratory. With this end, they laid as much stress on examples taken from the outside world as on experiments which can be undertaken in a simple laboratory. They tried to keep the viewpoint as wide as possible, and to show something of the landscape as weil as the trees. It was discovered, however, that a number of persons no longer young found that the books were of interest, and an edition was therefore prepared for the generál reader. The stock of this has now been exhausted and war conditions make a reprint impossible. During the present emergency the publishers therefore propose to issue the three parts of the school edition as one volume under the title Simple Science. The text remains the same,
