PRESENTATION
Is it possible to describe a dream? This small book certainly attempts, to recount the "dream in colour" called the Veneto. Although it is a relatively small geographical area, it is perhaps unique as it contains not only the singular city of Venice, but also many extraordinary art cities, a world-famous spa district, kilometre upon kilometre of beaches, the gentleness of Lake Garda and the grandeur of the Dolomites.
A dream in colour, as has already been said, where the Byzantine-inspired gold of the Basilica of San Marco blends with the blues, the reds, the ochres of the Burano fishermen's houses; where in the green of the hills and plains the brilliant whiteness of the impressive architecture of the villas stands out; where the sun throws new strokes of colour each day on the boulders of the Dolomites and Garda Lake reflects the lake-side towns in its blue-green waters.
The aim of this guide is to introduce visitors — or better still, guests, with the sense of total respect that the people of Veneto give to this word — to this dream, so that they may touch things with their very hands, so that they may come to understand that all this is an extraordinary reality to be enjoyed.
In this Journey through the Veneto, there is predominance of information of a historical and artistic nature. This is unavoidable as this publication is only an introduction to the Veneto. In order to understand and love the Veneto of today, it is necessary to know its past, to understand the choices made by many men of culture, art and learning.
It is not a lesson — note well — but a pleasurable excursion through a Veneto that was and still is "gracious", with its knowledge of how to blend economic and cultural aspects of tourism in the best possible way.
