PREFACEThis textbook - a companion work to Andras and Stephanides' theoretical volume "Descriptive Grammar" - is intended to provide students of English departments in Hungary, and in general advanced learners of English, with practical help in assimilating English structures. In method, it is something of a transition between the traditional and modern approach to language learning, for while it contains a large number of exercises in the use of the most important grammatical structures, it is at the same time an attempt to develop the learner's awareness of the nature of language, which the author thinks has been largely neglected in language teaching. For convenience of reference, the material is arranged according to the traditional categories of parts of speech; Some chapters originally planned, such as numerals, interjections, etc., have been omitted for want of space. The examples of English included have been drawn from the sources in the Select Bibliography - it is hoped these will be found the most useful from the language teacher's point of view, usefulness in the author's opinion being a far more important consideration than originality.Comments and corrections will be gladly noted.Debrecen, January 1967.
