FOREWORD
It is an honour to introduce these contributions to what, I am sure, will long be remembered as a landmark for English Studies in Hungary. It fell to the Department of English, of L. Kossuth Univer -sity, Debrecen to initiate what I am certain others will now very reasonably wish to emulate in their turn. The very best sort of birthday present that any branch of study could desire must be the meeting of scholars from all points of the compass to assess what has been done and to point to the goals that may yet be attained.
These hopes the Seminar held in Debrecen from 8th - 11th September 1978 abundantly fulfilled. To me it was especially inspiring to feel that alike in the most senior scholars present (and how much one is indebted to them became clear not from their own modest contributions, but from the enthusiastic commendations of others) as in the challenging work produced by younger scholars, the future of English Studies in Hungary is in excellent hands,
English Studies in Hungary have perhaps not, in the past, been as well known as they deserved to be. But from here onwards there can be no excuse for a wider public failing to take heed of the signal achievements of Hungarian scholarship to date and, much more, the promise of that which is still to come. March, 1979.
