The current issue of//wigariűH Studies in English is a Iruly inlcrnalional volume both in terms of ils thematic range and the nationality of its contributors, and the editors have spccial pleasure in making it available to those interested in North American and English Studies. The bulk of Volume XXI is made up of sleeted papers presented at the American Studies Symposium held in Debrecen on April 21 -23,1987. The theme of the symposium was "The Artist in America"; it was jointly arranged and sponsored by the United Slates Information Agcncy, and the English departments or L. The organizers of the symposium were Paul Levine, Salgó Professor of the Budapest English Department and Professor Zoltán Abádi-Nagy of the English Department of Kossuth University. The symposium was opened by Mark Palmer, United States Ambassador to Hungary, and Professor Mihály Beck, Rector of Kossuth University. The eight contributors of the symposium included Irving Howe of the City University of New York, who presented a set of two IcctDres entitled "The American Artist in the Age of Emerson," István Geher of L. Eötvös University, Budapest, on "People in Crisis: Two Poets from Minnesota", and Péter Dávidházi, also of the Budapest English Department, on "The Critic as Artist." Thus the five symposium contributors represented in the pages of Volume XXI arc Heinz Ickstadt (Division of North AmericanLiterature, John F.Kennedy Institute, Free University, West Berlin), Benidt Ostendorf (Amcrica-Instilut, Munich), Bálint Rozsnyai (A.
