- 1 -PREFACEBritish newspapers have a special -vocabulary and style v/hich may seem difficult to understand even for the advanced learner of Englie'i. This "book, designed for upper-intermediate and advanced students, aims to help them understand this special language and encourages them to read faster and more efficiently.The book offers a broad selection of articles accompanied by advertisements, cartoons, theatre reviews, etc. to make it lively and interesting. The extracts are all taken from British newspapers, with the exception of a few in unit 3, which come from the Hungarian "Daily News",The book is divided into 14 units. Each unit, except the first one, corresponds to a section or page in a newspaper. The units follow the order in which their subject matter generally appear in a British newspaper.Almost all units have more than one section. Each section contains newspaper extracts followed by exercises to improve reading skills. Some aim at a better understanding of newspaper headlines; others try to improve the students' skills in identîly-.ing _ the subject matter /i.e. skimmin?/, reading for specific information /i.e. scanning/ or finding the central idea of the articles.
