Applied Clay Science, 5 (1991) 377Elsevier Science Publishers B.V., AmsterdamPrefaceAt the 24th Annual Meeting of the Clay Minerals Society in Soccoro, NewMexico, on October 18-22, 1987, a symposium on Technological Applica-tions of Clay Minerals was organized by myself and Dr. Wayne Bundy. Thissymposium had 21 presentations that covered the applications of the clayminerals in various process industries, engineering, petroleum discovery, re-covery, and refining, and others. Most all applications are related to the struc-ture and composition of the particular clay mineral involved. Several of thepapers could not be published because the companies felt that some of theinformation was proprietary and other authors did not write their papers butpresented information orally from slides. The papers that are published in this special issue of Applied Clay Sciencewere selected from this symposium and cover some major applications whichinclude paper coating and filling, ceramics, catalyst preparation, foundrybending clays, the very important role that clays play in the properties of soils, and an overview of the general properties of specific clay minerals that makethem applicable in particular process industries. Clays are important indus-trial minerals and this collection of papers will add to our understanding oftheir basic properties that make them so useful.Haydn H. Murray
