BEESLEY Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Central Veterinary Laboratory,Weybridge, SurreyThere are in the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) some 29-5 million sheep, 11-9 million cattle, 6-8 million pigs and 109 million poultry. By contrast there are only about 200,000 horses, and only one-quarter of these are employed in farm work. About seventy species of arthropods may infest our farm livestock and pet animals, and representative pests are listed in Table 1. Various species of mites and lice are the most common parasites, some being highly specific and restricted to one host.Table 1. Some research on veterinary entomology is done at these institutions, and in the various zoology and agricultural departments
