The many-storied blocks of flats, the hustle and bustle and the din of traffic have not yet reached these streets that are striking by their provincial character. On such a street near Galea Victoriei (Victory Road), the town's main thorough-fare, can be seen a true oasis of art: tlie Elena arid Doctor 1. Dona Collection, donated hy the collectors to the Bucharest People's Council.This collection containing several hundred pictures is the fruit of the assiduousness of an amateur with great knowledge of art. Several generations of artists succeeded each other during Dr. I. Dona's lifetime. Nicolae Grigorescu, Stefan Luchian, Gheorghe Petrascu, Nicolae Tonitza, Francisc Sirato and Theodor Pallady were among his old accquaint-ances. He was friends with losif Iser, Jean A. Steriadi and Camil Ressu. He helped and encouraged the younger painters, who had already begun to assert themselves twenty years ago, such as Alexandra Ciucurencu, M. W. Arnold and Lucian Grigorescu.
