PREFACE
This book has been written to cover the needs of candidates for the Cambridge Lower Certificate in English examination. It comprises twenty Test Papers which have been specially prepared for the Listening Comprehension Test, which is included in the oral part of this examination. The test may be practised in class, the student using the separate book containing the suggested responses and the teacher giving the test from this book. Each test takes about thirty minutes.
A complete specimen paper, as issued by the University of Cambridge to illustrate the current (1973-74) form of the test, in which both a story and a selection of short items are included, is also given in the book. Teachers must read this care-
fully before giving their students the first test, noting the instructions to students and detailed timings.
The aim of the Listening Comprehension Test is to examine the candidate's ability to understand current English. As far as pronunciation is concerned special care should be given to the first three exercises in each paper. Accuracy in pronunciation and intonation is most important. Therefore it is advised that teachers should carefully prepare each paper before giving theii students a test.
The exercises in the twenty papers have been checked in class and have proved adequate to cover the needs of students at Lower Certificate level.
