FOREWORD
For over thirty years, wliich is the average lifetime of an active surgeon, my late colleague and I edited succeeding editions of Short Practice of Surgery. We were encouraged in this task as the demand for successive editions, in both English-speaking and foreign countries, indicated that our efforts were appreciated by all ranks of our profession, and that it helped to maintain the principles and standards of British svirgery.
The editors who are now shouldering the responsibility of producing new editions are eminent members of our profession, well versed in the art of teaching, and who have contributed much to the advancement of the science as well as the art of surgery.
Although it is less than three years since the previous edition was published surgical progress has necessitated revision of many of the chapters, and eradication of obsolescent material. This has resulted in a reduction of the size of this edition, as compared with the former one, by nearly fifty pages.
Our grateful thanks are due to the PubUshers for their customary cooperation and practical suggestions. They are to be congratulated that, in spite of the considerable rise in the cost of paper, printing and other production expenses, they have produced this edition at the same price as the former one.
