Deslinalioit: Laké Balatona Irip lo a jolly recrealion land To swimmers, sunbathers, and aquatic sports enthusiasts. Laké Balaton is a generous gift of nature. White and multicoloured sails glide over the sun-reflecting water, and the waves splash in the wake of the water skiers. Laughter and the nőise of carefree play sound from the beaches, from the endless chain of colourful ¦ camping sites, and from the parks with their shadow-casting trees. Out of the water rise blue mountains with sloping vineyards where in old press houses the grapes are squashed that make the sparkling vine stored in the cellars of this famous region. Hidden in the valleys reaching out to the laké, there are the famous castle "ruins", the small towns with their tiny baroque mansions, their statues carved in stone and their moss-covered ií mills. There they are - the gently rolling hills, L ' the old "csárdás" (village pubs), the lovely I hamlets with their white-washed houses. There is charm, there is románcé in the air. ' At night, the rising moon forms a silvery bridge between the two shores. The breeze coming from the laké carries the scent of the water to ^ the sun-tanned young people on their way to f the night clubs where guitars, jazz organs and gipsy violins fill the air with music - music for ¦ all. Relaxation, rest and well-balanced exercise, f harmony of past and present, interesting | excursions and entertainment - this is Laké ^ / Balaton for you. m Laké Balaton, situated in Transdanubia the Western part of Hungary, is the largest laké of Central and Western Europe. It covers an area of about 600 square kilometers, measuring 77 km in length and between two and 14 km in width. The shoreline is 197 km and the lake's average depth is 3 m; the shallow water and the sandy shore in the South are ideál for tamilies with small children. In summer, the water quickly warms up to a temperature of 21-27° C. In spring, the first sun rays attract swimmers to the beach and the season lasts far into September. But the most beautiful time is autumn. Those who do not mind bathing in water below 22° C might enjoy the pleasures of summer merged with the gorgeous colours and moods of autumn. The temperature of the laké is rather steady, the air-because of the surrounding forest-covered mountains-is clear as well as dust-free, and only moderately humid. The sun shines particularly bright because it is reflected on the water and contains plenty of ultra-violet rays. The laké abounds in fish. The local speciality is "fogas" (perch-pike) which is called "süllő" when young. Other "sophisticated" fish such as glanis or carp are alsó available. A sudden storm at Laké Balaton is indeed an event of great fascination to watch. Rockets in vivid colours warn swimmers and people out sailing in good time of the approaching danger. Laké Balaton is in 90 kilometres Wóst from Budapest. From there it may be reached by car on the M-7 motorway. The distance from Vienna via Budapest to the laké is 326 km. From Vienna the E-5 (in Hungary M-1), takes its course across the frontier at Hegyeshalom-Nickelsdorf and on to Budapest; from there the M-7 highway leads directly to the lake. If you leave the E-5 at Győr and then take Road 82, the distance is only 201 km, if you take Road 83, 217 km. Driving from Vienna and crossing the bordér at Klingenbach-Sopron on Road 84, the distance is 186 km. From Zagreb, through Hodosan-Letenye on the M-7: 188 kilometres. From Belgrade, through Udvar-Knezevo, on Roads 56 and 65: 369 kilometres. Fróm Bratislava. CSSR, through Rajka-Hrusoca, on the E-5 (M-1 ) and after reaching Gyoron Road 82: 163 kilometres.
