FOREWORD
One of the goals of the PhD School of Historical Studies at the Eötvös Loránd University is to forge international academic relationships. Therefore we welcome PhD students from abroad who are interested in a particular period or issue of Hungarian history. The same objective is served by the participation of our lecturers in academic training abroad and at international conferences.
A source of information about each other's work and academic achievement are the publications in major languages and contributions to jointly prepared and published study collections. Our PhD students can use these studies as reference works - a pre-requisite for them is to be able to communicate in one or two major world languages.
The subject matter of this volume incorporates mostly those essays that were published abroad but their subject remains largely ignored internationally. The Hungarian reading public, those interested in historical studies, lecturers and students have had practically no access to them as they had not been published in Hungary.
The studies are grouped into thematic units and are released here in their original, unaltered version.
