CHAPTER 1
Judah and Messala
It was the 17th year of the Christian era. The Roman Empire extended far and wide, including the land of Judea and its holy city of Jerusalem. Judea's cruel ruler, King Herod, was dead, and the Roman emperor had named a less important official, a procurator, to rule.
Growing up in Judea at this time were three young men: Judah, a Jew, who lived in Jerusalem; Messala, a Roman, who also lived in the Holy City; and Jesus, a Jew, who lived in Nazareth — a small village near Jerusalem.
Judah Ben-Hur lived with his mother and
