IJosepk anJ Mary Come to BetkleLemMany years ago the Romans ruled all the known world. Their great armies beat down all Rome's enemies until few were left to fight them. The beaten countries had to pay taxes which made Rome rich. Among these beaten peoples were the Jews. Now again it was tax paying time. The Romans wanted to be sure to get all the money they could. So they sent all people back to the towns where they were born. Then the Romans would be sure to get everybody's tax money. And so the little town called Bethlehem in the Holy Land was full. The village inn could not house the many people. Late comers had even filled the inn yard. The gate keeper was turning people away. One of these late comers was a quiet black-haired man leading a donkey. On the donkey's back sat a young woman. The man waited quietly."My name is Joseph," he said to the gate keeper. "My wife and I were born in Bethlehem. We are here for the taxes. Is there not room for""There is not."1
