Of all cats, the lion is the most social {top and opposite, bottom right). The nucleus of a lion pride is a group of between two and nine related females, who defend a common territory. Members of a pride do not always stay together, but frequently split up into smaller sub-prides.
Two or more females within a pride may give birth to cubs simultaneously, the different mothers freely suckling each other's cubs. It is not unusual to see two or three litters of cubs together [opposite, centre and top right). Lionesses remain with the pride
