PREFACE In most parts of the world birds are the most conspicuous animals easily seen by people as they go about their daily affairs. Hence in almost all countries men are interested in birds to a greater or lesser degree. Birds are frequent themes in religion, folklore and custom. They are important economically, providing both food and various products made from their feathers and other parts. Shooting them provides recreation in many developed countries. And in the past two hundred years they have been studied scientifically and have provided the basis of important advances in biological knowledge. Ornithology, as the scientific study of birds is called, has contributed important facets to our knowledge of evolution, zoogeography, ethology and general biology. Slight differences in the appearance, from one island to another, of the rather nondescript looking Darwin's finches of the Galapagos Islands stimulated Charles Darwin to work out his classic theory, which still holds the field 140 years after he visited the islands. More recently, in 1947, they also led the late David Lack to write Darwin's Finches, which many people consider to be the best book on evolution since the Origin of Species. Study of the world-wide distributipn of birds made by P. L. Sclater in 1858 formed the basis of the zoogeographical regions, Palaearctic, Ethiopian, Oriental, and so on, which are still used today.
