Alain Lausard peered up at the dull grey light of dawn creeping through the bars of the cell and sighed wearily. The arrival of a new day promised nothing for him. It would be a day like any other. A day of monotony spent alone in his eight-feet-square cell. A day indistinguishable from all those he had already endured and he knew it would continue until those who chose to keep him captive decided otherwise. The soul-destroying predictability would only be interrupted by the arrival of a iew slops pushed through the slot at the bottom of the wooden cell door; and these would only come if someone on the other side could be bothered to ladle gruel into the wooden bowls that passed for eating receptacles. Sometimes the meagre meals never even arrived.
Lausard got to his feet and took two paces across the cell to the window. Two strides was all it took to cover the cramped confines of the enclosure. He was a powerfully built man and even the lack of good nourishment for so long had done little to diminish the impressiveness of his physique. His hair was long and
