PréfacéThis volume assumes that the vital forces of the universe are working toward a world-wide human brotherhood under God. It aims to be a contribution toward this end through a study of world communityits development and some of its responsibilities and spiritual resources.Catching the long perspective of the centuries, we see how from prehistoric times human folk have been more and more dispersed over this planet, and how varieties of cultures and races came slowly into being. Through a rapid survey an attempt is thus made to see how the fundamental problems of a global family have developed, and what héritage from the âges is at our disposai. Without such hard-won contributions to human society anything like a family relationship for ail mankind in our day would be impossible. (See Chapters II and III.)But any serious adoption of a genuine community goal for mankind makes far-reaching demands upon us. Enlarging our circle of consciousness to include a world fraternity involves an unprecedented mental and spiritual change within us. Our shriveled world has laid upon us problems arising from cultural diversity and from the need of adjustment between races. We have to deepen our respect for unlikeness, and to transcend our différences through understanding and the higher unity of the spirit. For most people, although love of locality has been enlarged to include love of country, love of mankind is little more than an idéal which now presses for embodiment. (See Chapters IV and V.)
