Preface
British Politics in Focus has been devised and written by a team of lecturers who teach A level and higher education courses. Its aim is to provide a new approach to the study of British Government and Politics.
Each chapter in British Politics in Focus follows the same format. Chapters have the following features:
Introduction A brief outline of the main subjects to be covered
by the chapter as a whole.
Chapter summary An outline of the material to be covered in each part of the chapter.
Key Issues At the beginning of each new part of a chapter,
Key Issues are raised. A single part of a chapter is often broken into several discrete sections.
Activities At the end of each section in a chapter, an activity is
provided to apply, reinforce and extend the points made in the preceding text. Activities utilise a wide range of up-to-date primary source material.
Cross referencing Since many readers will not read the book from beginning to end, cross references are included at frequent intervals to indicate where further information can be found.
References At the end of each chapter, a list of references is
provided. This is not intended to be a comprehensive hst. It simply provides further information about the books and articles which are specifically mentioned in the text.
I would like to thank Alan, Maggie and Roy, my fellow authors, who have worked hard through all the stages of the book's preparation and have been willing to revise their work to meet changes and refinements in format and style as the project has developed. Others have also contributed at various stages - notably, John, Philip, Steve, Will and Wyn - and we would like to thank them for their efforts. Thanks are also due to all at Causeway Press who have been associated with the project, especially to Steve Lancaster without whose encouragement and clear-sighted approach to the book as a whole, it may never have reached completion. All mistakes, of course, remain the responsibility of the authors.
Finally, we would welcome any comments you may have about British Politics in Focus, whether critical or otherwise.
