INTRODUCTION
H The Buda Castle District can be found on the left bank of the Danube that flows through the centre of Budapest, perhaps one of Europe's most beautiful capital cities, and has been listed as a UlNESCO Worid Heritage Site since 1987. The district clearly falls into two separate parts: the old town and the royal palace. Three streets run in parallel through the old town with the fourth following the irregular perimeter of Castle Hill. The whole district is encircled by a castle wall with gates at regular intervals. Largely closed to road traffic, the area can be accessed on foot from the south and west and by bus from the north and east, as well as via the funicular railway from the banks of the Danube. With its medieval monuments, atmospheric 17th- and 18th- century residential and public buildings and quiet town life, this district provides an attractive retreat from the busy city that surrounds it.
