A Crucial Year
On the occasion of this ninth Soka Gakkai International (SGI) Day, I would like to share with you some of my thoughts on how we can bring new energy to the advance of SGI aims in 1984.
This year will also be one of renewed efforts by our fellow members in other countries who are devoted to the causes of peace, culture and education in accordance with the Buddhist teachings of Nichiren Daishonin. We can look forward to ever more significant achievements in these fields as friendship and exchange, transcending national borders, grow between Japanese members of Soka Gakkai and their fellows overseas. I myself find that the warm encouragement of friends around the world gives me renewed resolve to contribute to the common task of all mankind—the achievement of world peace —and fresh determination to devote heart and soul to expanding the international network of people who abhor war.
No matter where we look around the world, there is confusion and strife, and conditions only grow worse as time goes by. Far from promising the creation of a new international order, the world situation is now more unstable than ever; crisis is held at bay by the barest hairtrigger. A new age of "nuclear instability" has begun.
