Preface to Second Alternate Edition
The publication of this text, Business Law: Second Alternate Edition, completes the second stage of a publishing cycle begun four years ago.
The standard text. Business Law: Text and Cases, was first published in January, 1978. With seven chapters devoted to an examination of the overall legal environment, a conversational style, outstanding accuracy, and a comparahvely full presentation of the illustrative court decisions, it soon became the most widely accepted new text in the field in 30 years.
Nevertheless, the authors were aware that instructors at some schools had to move at a pace that prevented them and their students from closely analyzing the reasoning of the court decisions. To meet the needs of these instructors and students, the authors published Business Law: Alternate Edition in January, 1979. In that edition, the decisions of the courts were paraphrased and greatly abbreviated. In all other respects, the ALTERNATE EDITION retained the basic strengths of Text and Cases, and achieved a similarly wide measure of success in the national market.
The second edition of Text and Cases appeared in January, 1981. Now, as before, this Second Alternate Edition is based on Text and Cases, but presents the cases in a more abbreviated form. In addition, a number of new classroom-tested improve-
